Projected Effect of Adding CeaseFire Citywide
As the first chart shows, increases and decreases in homicides in Chicago have historically coincided with the status of funding of CeaseFire in Chicago. Most notably, when CeaseFire's funding was tripled in 2004, homicides dropped by 25% (click here for a more indepth analysis of CeaseFire in 2004). Likewise, when CeaseFire's funding was interrupted in 2007, homicides went up (click here for a more indepth analysis of the effect of CeaseFire cuts).
Adding the CeaseFire intervetion citywide in Chicago is projected to decrease shootings by 30%. This 30% reduction forecast is a conservative estimate based on the findings of the Department of Justice's Evaluation of CeaseFire. This would reduce homicides in Chicago to below 200 within 3 years of full implementation.
