The National Institute of Justice funded an extensive independent evaluation of the CeaseFire violence prevention model that was released in 2008. The evaluation examined seven communities all around Chicago where the CeaseFire program was implemented. All seven communities experienced statistically significant reduction in gun violence. Below is a map of each of the seven communities and the reduction in gun violence that was tied to the implementation of CeaseFire in that community.

Englewood is a community about 9 miles southwest of the Loop in Chicago. CeaseFire has been active here since 2005. The independent evaluation found that this site had a 41% reduction in shootings and attempted shootings, 40% reduction in the concentration of shootings, and a 100% reduction in retaliation homicides. Because neighboring areas had similar reductions, the reduction specifically attributable to CeaseFire could not be determined. CeaseFire was very active in these neighboring areas, which further complicates the evaluator’s ability to determine program effect.

Auburn Gresham is about 11 miles south of the Loop in Chicago and is just to the south of the CeaseFire Englewood program site. Auburn Gresham was the third community to implement the CeaseFire program starting in April 2002.
The independent evaluation of CeaseFire found the strongest and most consistent results showing a CeaseFire effect in the Auburn Gresham community. These results included a 52% reduction in gun homicides due to the CeaseFire program; a 21% reduction in shootings and killings due to the program; a 16% reduction in shootings and attempted shootings due to the program; a 15% decrease in the concentration of shooting due to the program; and a 100% reduction in retaliation homicides. All of these percent reductions are specifically due to the CeaseFire program, actual reductions in the community were much larger.

West Garfield Park is about 5 miles west of the Loop in Chicago. This is CeaseFire’s very first program site, starting in beat 1115 in February 2000. In its first year, this site witnessed a 68% reduction in shootings, however because there were multiple program efforts in this area at the time including strong police activities, the exact reduction that the CeaseFire program was responsible for was uncertain.
The independent evaluation of CeaseFire was able to isolate the CeaseFire effect and found that the CeaseFire program itself was responsible for a reduction in shootings and killings of 28%, a reduction in shootings and attempted shootings of 22%, and a decrease in the concentration of shootings of 24%. All of these percent reductions are specifically due to the CeaseFire program, actual reductions in the community were much larger.
