WEEKLY CEASEFIRE MEDIA ROUND-UP (JAN 23-27 2012)
CeaseFire is honored to be named one of the “Top 100 NGOs in the world” by The Global Journal in the first of its kind ranking. Recognizing the significant role of NGOs as influential change agents, The Global Journal documented a dynamic list of the 100 leading actors in the field. CeaseFire was listed as #30 worldwide and shares the stage with Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, International Rescue Committee, PATH, CARE International, Ushahidi, Medic Mobile and Ashoka.
Johns Hopkins evaluation of Baltimore-based CeaseFire replication, Safe Streets, was completed this month finding a statistically significant decline in homicide, nonfatal shootings, or both in the communities where we work (Read more here). Also, the Atlantic just wrote a great profile of the program.
New York-based CeaseFire replication, Operation SNUG, in Harlem relocated to a new headquarters in a more neutral area of the community. Marcus McAllister, CeaseFire National Coordinator, explains that, “A crucial part of this [move] is having a space where you can have high-risk guys. You need to be open late so people can move in and out. The space needs to be a safe haven.”
CeaseFire Chicago was featured as part of the University of Chicago Grand Rounds to share insights gleaned from its successful hospital-based violence prevention program.
Tio Hardiman, Director of CeaseFire Illinois, shared his personal story of survival and triumph with the Chicago Defender.
